January-August Fortress of Freedom Exhibit.
Award-winning exhibit devoted to Fort Mose--America's first free black community. Open daily at the Ponce de Leon Mall on US 1 South. Exhibit tells the story of runaway slaves who escaped to St. Augustine where they were given their freedom by Spanish officials. Free admission. Nights of Lights

January 1 - 16 Lightner Museum Victorian Christmas

6th ANNUAL 5K COOKIE RUN
The 6th Annual 5K Cookie Run is hosted by Girl Scout Troop 854. The run, which benefits St. Augustine Girl Scouts, is held in St. Augustine South along the scenic Matanzas River. Parking will be in the Flagler Hospital's southwest parking lot. The race will begin at 9:00am on Shores Drive 1/4-mile east of the first entrance to St. Augustine South off of US1. February 4 ROYAL FAMILY TRANSFER OF OFFICE

February 23-25 MENENDEZ BIRTHDAY FESTIVAL
Birthday celebration for Don Pedro Menendez, founder of St. Augustine, begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with the Aviles Street Festival. A full schedule of events begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday including authentic food, Paso Fino demonstrations and the Gran Paseo parade at 3 p.m. Noche de Gala, a 16th Century masked ball, takes place at 7 p.m. at the Lightner Museum. April 8 BLESSING OF THE FLEET
Witness a ceremony that dates back hundreds of years as those that take to the sea, in commercial and pleasure craft alike, receive a blessing from the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. The event draws thousands each Palm Sunday to watch as watercraft from travelers and yachts to sailboats and motor craft, all decorated with flags and bunting, receive this special blessing. Ceremony begins at noon with a procession from the Cathedral Basilica to the City Marina.

Productions of two original plays selected from Limelight Theatre?s second annual Florida state-wide original play competition. October 13 HISPANIC AWARENESS DAY
Fourth annual event designed to enhance awareness of the influence of Hispanic culture on St. Augustine. Features the LONGEST conga line in Florida, mask making, Latin band, balcony decoration contest, and Hispanic cultural demonstrations. Events begin at noon at the Arrivas House, 46 St. George Street. October 20, 2001 CELEBRATION OF KIFE MEORIAL CONCERT
Time: Noon to 9:30 pm, St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Anastasia Island. To benefit the St. Augustine Amphitheatre restoration project. To honor the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who passed away 24 years ago in the plane crash (Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick) and Allen Collins and Leon Wilkeson. The event is on the 24th anniversary of the plane crash and will feature Artimus Pyle’s band, APB. Artimus is known as the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd and his band mates are Lynyrd Skynyrd alumni. The Southern rock festival will also feature Kymystry, The No Exit Band, Gunga Din, Tribolotomee and the Fenwicks. Miranda Louise, known as the number one Blues artists in Nashville, will perform along with Rob Peck, Those Guys, Shelton Irwin, Sam Pacetti, Michael Buffalo Smith, Lee Bogan and the Rockits and Lorna.
