MANATEE SPRINGS CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL
December 11th and 12th (6 p.m. - 9 p.m.)
150 thousand Christmas lights illuminate the park and its boardwalk which leads to the Suwannee River. A 50-ft. Christmas tree will be lighted at 6 p.m. and Santa arrives in a most unusual way both nights at 6:15. A musical puppet show will be presented by local children. Admission to the park will be either canned goods or an unwrapped new toy. Come enjoy this increasingly popular annual event.

All children 15 and under are invited to come to the park to hunt for Short Billy Copper's lost treasure chest. It's said to contain at least $30.00 and is hidden somewhere in the spring. Bring on the holiday season with a concert under the stars. This 8th annual event features music of the season, performed by local school groups, churches, and individual performers. The highlight is an audience sing-along as candlelight fills the outdoor St. Augustine Amphitheater, located near the park on A1A. Donations requested for Help Our State Parks fund. MANATEES!
From mid-November
Manatees seek out the 72-degree warmth of Blue Spring when winter chills the St. Johns River. Observe the endangered mammals from a boardwalk along the spring run. Best viewing is in the morning or late afternoon. Once the manatees have arrived, an interpretive program about manatees is offered daily at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

A DAY IN FLORIDA HISTORY
August 1 (9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
Take a walk through time, from Florida's prehistoric natives up through present times. Visit camps for Timucuan Indians, Spanish soldiers and civilians, Seminole Indians, Civil War soldiers, and more. In the afternoon, watch a reenactment of a skirmish that took place at this site during the Second Seminole Indian War in the 1830s. Picnic lunches, lawn chairs and cameras suggested. Our beautifully renovated spring pool is open for swimming.

KIDS ' CANE POLE FISHING TOURNAMENT
Oct. 3 (9:00 a.m. - noon)
Share the fun of fishing with your youngsters up to age 12 in this catch-and-release event. Trophies are awarded for most fish, largest fish and smallest fish. Ribbons for all participants. Bait will be provided, but bring your own pole. Parents are requested to supervise their young fishermen. Register the day of the tournament or drop by the park to pick up registration forms ahead of time. No registration by phone. Sponsored in cooperation with the Friends of DeLeon Springs SRA.

PUBLIC STAR PARTY

Weather permitting, a group of local amateur astronomers set up their telescopes to show park visitors the wonders of the night sky. Glowing clouds of gas (nebulae), galaxies, planets and star clusters may all be visible for the viewer to enjoy. If you have binoculars, bring them, as many objects and stars are best seen through binoculars. Visitors must arrive before sunset and leave by midnight. Park entrance fee.

Astronomers from around the state are invited to set up their telescopes and observe under some of Florida's darkest skies. Daytime activities will include talks, swap table and dealer displays. Call park for schedule of events. Park entrance fee.

GUIDED OVERNIGHT BACKPACKING

An experienced Park Ranger will lead you on a trip through some of Florida's most beautiful back country. These trips will begin in November and are available by reservation. Inexperienced backpackers are welcome, since these trips aim to educate about outdoor camping. SEA TURTLE WALKS

Watch a slide show to learn about the life cycle, problems, and what is being done to help sea turtles. Then walk with a ranger down a beautiful stretch of Atlantic Ocean beach to find a nesting Loggerhead sea turtle. Turtles were seen on over 85% of the tours last year. The walk can be up to 2 miles in length. Insect repellent is recommended and reservations required. NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC SURFING ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP SURF CONTEST
