The Microbreweries and Brew Pubs of Florida
By Matthew Beale

ALE:
One of the larger families of beers. True ales are brewed with top-fermenting yeast. They are low in carbonation and served warm. Best known in England.

BOCK:
German-style beer with a strong alcoholic content.

LAGER:
From the German word to store, lagers represent a major family of beers. They have a longer and cooler fermentation period than ales and are brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast. Most German and North American beers are lagers.

PILSNER:
A type of lager beer, first made in Czechoslovakia in the late 13th century.

PORTER:
A characteristically dark brown beer of English origin.

STOUT:
A fuller-bodied, richer and sweeter version of porter (created by Ireland's Guiness).

he Williamsville Brewery, established in Virginia near the birthplace of Patrick Henry in 1963, is an ambitious company whose boast matches their bite, so to speak. In early 1995, Williamsville hit a "home run with great exposure" when they reached an agreement with Paramount to set up a microbrewery at the Kings Dominion amusement park. And they certainly did not cease growing there. In fall of the same year, Bob Cabaniss, President of the company, purchased the St. Maarten Breweries N.V. in the Netherlands Antilles, near Puerto Rico. And in January of 1996, Williamsville set up shop on Amelia Island, in Fernandina Beach, establishing their second brewery operation.

From Border Porter to Apple & Ale , Williamsville offers a fine selection of fermented beverages brewed in the tradition of fine English ales. Amelia Ale , is a light offering, that should please those looking for a less full, heavy beer. Cabo Pale Ale is one for the connoisseur of this subtle, popular standard. Porter is a heavy old world ale, originally known as Goat Scrotum Ale , that's known for its dark, sweet and spicy character. Although this style can be infused with any number of a world of ingredients, the Williamsville Border Porter is an attractive and must drink for the adventurous. Apple & Ale is exactly what it would seem to be, a full bodied ale with the lingering tart flavor of the fruit of temptation.

First Coast Brewing, another of Williamsville's operations (based out of both Fernandina Beach and Wilmington, North Carolina), sends forth a unique, small selection of beers to a world both in want and need of such delights. First Coast offerings include their Mango ale , as well as Bikini , ale fermented with honey. These selections complete Williamsville's collection nicely, with something indeed for virtually everyone looking for a quality, hand crafted beer.

The Clevelander Brewery
Enjoy a fine, hand-crafted beer in the atmosphere of one of the most fashionable of the Art Deco hotels on South Beach. Jamie, the brewmaster, (who will also serve at the helm of the soon-to-be-opened Titanic), is a wonderful conversationalist and a brewer to be reckoned with. Stop by, try out his wares, and chat with him about it. Highly recommended.
